That is the place I will be putting all the developer diaries... IT is a blog but more than that it will allow for hangouts to be published and thus live streaming of DDVs and have ability to discuss with potential players things. Now with all that said, I have just started that location and also am doing research still. I have a few people right now assisting with research, two of which you can message here on the forum. Tank and Dr Proxis are whom I am talking about.
The work that they are assisting with is not only for the first games but also for any game that is produced and made by myself. I am proud to have them included in the Research team. Now what they are working on are spreadsheets of information that is collected from various sources. Thus allowing the information to be correct. IE for instance the actual cost of the Bismark was 196 million RM, IF I place different currencies into the games and also exchange rates that would be at 1936( date of construction) around 47 million dollars if I did that calculation correctly. So with that the German player would have to allocate 196 million for just the bismark, not its sister ship also.
Now all that said, Each thing researched is important for the historical accuracy of the games. I want to be able to show ingame vs historical record differences when it comes to technology, ships, etc. Thus the work is important to the projects. Now with that said, All the games will be using the same information.
Now onto the Developer Diary Blog location... as I had digressed into the research aspect and those assisting ;D. The developer diaries will consist of information gained from the research, possibly even samples/actual code for the information. Eventually I will be showing screenshots and the like once I get a working game engine created. I have found multiple resources now through different development websites(mind you they are at the youngest from 2010) about how to create game engines from scratch. When I get back to the USA I plan on purchasing a few of them.
Now with that said, I am looking for people that want to assist in the spreadsheets themselves. I have a conceptual artist that will be learning Gimp ASAP. I plan on discussing with a annimation editor/graphics designer when I get back, also I have a person I will be discussing with to compose and do sound enginneering for the games. With all that said though, Suggestions are welcome at anytime. I want to be sure to state that any suggestion at this time is welcome, as per this is the predevelopment stage... BUT I have to state also that once a game goes into alpha stage, suggestions will be welcome but possibly not implemented due to features already being developed.
Now the interesting thing about helping with research, is your work directly influences the games made. Each item that is researched adds immersion and historical events/actions/modifiers/etc to the games. Thus per say, someone decides to make barbed fish hooks early, that would give them a temporary bonus to all fishing and snare making that no other "people" can get for a set time period... That was just an example of different things that may or may not be included in the games. Right now I have many ideas on how to make the game fun and interesting, where no two playthroughs are the same... BUT the Research must be first and formost done for at least the first game made.
When I get back to the USA, I will be working in Gamemaker, or another game engine to prototype the game I will be coding in my own engine. Thus allowing me to do two things at once, Make a game prototype and make a game engine where I can copy and paste the code into. Now that being said, I dont see a creation of the game engine till maybe later this year if this year at all. I dont see how I can hit my optimistic look of being almost in beta testing right now. With that said, I am speaking frankly and honestly. I do not see how it can be done, mind you it will be a total of over 270 days but still alot of work to be done.
Now, I want to state, My projections of cell phone games being released were a bit premature unless I use a premade engine. Now I may do that, and I may not... I have not decided. I though want you all to know that I am trying to make the PC games as fast as I can and make sure I learn everything I need to learn. That being said, IT has taken me over a year to learn basic C++. I am happy to state that I did complete the last lesson of basic C++ recently. When I get back to the USA I will continue with my original lesson load and possibly be out of advanced C++ by august of this year. That being said, I am doing things at my pace. I understand people cant get hyped and then patient for games, but honestly the people that are patient get better reward for waiting. That being said, I hoping that I can get things going soon and games start "rolling off the line" ASAP. I though will not rush or make a game that has glaring bugs that testers could have found.
As it stands I have possibly four testers if remember right, potential testers please do correct me if wrong... I though feel I dont need more, as that is a 4/1 ratio of tester to developer. Now that being said, no game goes without bugs. I though want a "clean" release and thus will be sure I understand/have learned C++ before I even begin to code anything. I though have taken the advice of another game developer and will keep at least one feature working throughout making the game engine and then adding to it. Simple feature like movement or something of that sort will be the first to be coded and expanded on. Now with that said, I hope to be able to state in a year or so, that I have a alpha build and the developer diaries start... BUT being realistic I see it being more two years from this date and many many many errors later. I hope that you all will wait with me and those that are assisting.
Thank you for your time,
Drew
